Tasmania's Skilled Migration State Nomination Program to open on 17 August 2026
Following last month's announcement of Tasmania's nomination allocation for the 2026–27 program year, the Tasmanian Skilled Migration State Nomination Program will reopen to new Registrations of Interest (ROIs) on 17 August 2026. Migration Tasmania has now released further details about the program settings, including changes to the priority attributes, the invitation process and nomination requirements.
For the 2026–27 program year, Tasmania has been allocated a total of 2,050 nomination places, comprising:
1,250 places for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa; and
800 places for the Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa.
This constitutes an increase of 200 places compared with the previous 2025-26 program year, including 50 more Subclass 190 nomination places and 150 more Subclass 491 nomination places.
Weekly invitations will commence from 20 August 2026
Migration Tasmania will begin issuing invitations to apply for nomination on Thursday, 20 August 2026. Invitations will be issued weekly throughout the program year to help ensure nomination places remain available across the year.
Each week, Migration Tasmania will publish information on its website including:
the number of ROIs invited to apply;
the lowest ROI scores invited;
the number of nomination places remaining; and
the number of ROIs currently on hand.
Migration Tasmania will also publish the minimum ROI score likely to receive nomination at the time of assessment, based on the average of the lowest invitation scores over the previous three months.
If, during assessment, any of the selected priority attributes are not met and the applicant’s score falls below this published three‑month average, the nomination will not be approved.
Changes to priority attributes and program settings
Migration Tasmania has advised that changes have been made following a review of the 2025–26 program and feedback from stakeholders, to better reflect genuine commitment to living and working in Tasmania, make the priority attributes easier to understand, and improve the integrity of the nomination program.
Key changes include:
clearer and simpler wording for the priority attributes;
revised scoring to better recognise applicants who have made a longer contribution to Tasmania;
greater differentiation between applicants based on the length of their employment in Tasmania;
updated policy guidance regarding periods of leave and breaks between employment;
a revised Tasmanian Skilled Employment (TSE) Gold priority attribute requiring applicants to work at least 30 hours per week in at least one job;
updated income thresholds to reflect changes to Australian median and average earnings and the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (although the existing Priority Income Level of $57,000 per year or $28.85 per hour remains unchanged);
additional guidance for employment relating to massage therapists and motor mechanics/service technicians where applicants rely on employment matching their skills assessment or qualifications; and
an increase in the nomination application fee to $387 (or $425.70 including GST). There remains no fee to submit a Registration of Interest.

Should you submit a new Registration of Interest?
Migration Tasmania has noted that applicants who submitted an ROI within the past six months may wish to consider lodging a new ROI, as the revised priority attribute ranking criteria may improve their competitiveness.
Applicants should carefully review the new priority attributes before deciding whether submitting a new ROI would be beneficial.
No invitations planned for the Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles pathway
Following the Australian Government's announcement that visa processing will be prioritised for applicants who are already in Australia, Migration Tasmania has confirmed that it does not intend to issue invitations under the Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles (Invitation Only) pathway during the 2026–27 program year.
However, overseas applicants who secure employment with a Tasmanian health provider or school may still be eligible to seek nomination under the Subclass 190 Overseas Applicant – Health or Education Sector Job Offer pathway.
