Tasmania's Skilled Migration State Nomination Program to reopen for 2026–27
The Tasmanian Government has announced that the Tasmanian Skilled Migration State Nomination Program will reopen to new Registrations of Interest (ROI’s) in the coming weeks.
While an opening date has not yet been confirmed, Migration Tasmania has advised that further information will be published shortly. Anyone intending to seek Tasmanian nomination should review the updated 2026–27 program settings on Migration Tasmania’s website before submitting a new ROI, as there may be changes to the eligibility requirements or nomination priorities.
A quick recap of Migration Tasmania’s 2025–26 program
Tasmania’s 2025–26 Skilled Migration Program reopened before receiving its full allocation of places in that year, with significant changes, including a new ROI Gateway with a transparent ROI Scoring and ranking system, allowing candidates to see how competitive their ROI was through the allocation of Gold Pass, Green Pass and Orange Pass rankings.
The program also introduced updated nomination pathways and eligibility requirements across several streams, including changes to the Tasmanian Skilled Employment, Tasmanian Established Resident, Business Operator and Overseas Applicant pathways, revised priority roles and priority attributes, updated minimum employment and income thresholds, and the closure of the Subclass 491 Overseas Applicant (Job Offer) pathway.
Later in the program year, Tasmania received its full allocation of 2,860 nomination places, comprising 2,100 places for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa and 760 places for the Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa.
Tasmania's nomination allocation for 2026–27
For the 2026–27 program year, Tasmania has been allocated a total of 2,050 nomination places, comprising:
1,250 places for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa; and
800 places for the Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa.
Although the overall allocation is lower than last year's allocation, there has been a modest increase in the number of Subclass 491 nomination places.
I already have a nomination application lodged. What happens now?
If you have already lodged an application for Tasmanian nomination and are still waiting for a decision, Migration Tasmania has confirmed that your application will continue to be assessed under the requirements that applied when it was lodged.
If your application is approved, Tasmania will proceed to nominate you and you will receive a formal invitation to apply for the relevant Subclass 190 visa or Subclass 491 visa through SkillSelect.
I have applied for Subclass 491 nomination. Can I change to Subclass 190?
Migration Tasmania has clarified that applications already lodged for Subclass 491 nomination will not be considered for Subclass 190 nomination.
If you decide that you would prefer to pursue a Subclass 190 nomination instead, you will need to:
withdraw your existing Subclass 491 nomination application;
submit a new Registration of Interest for Subclass 190 once the 2026–27 program opens; and
receive a new invitation to apply.
Migration Tasmania has also noted that receiving an invitation for Subclass 190 nomination will depend on the level of demand and the number of nomination places available at the time. For this reason, applicants should carefully consider the risks before withdrawing an existing Subclass 491 nomination application.
